netbeans with external tomcat

rmorf
I have installed in my computer NetBeans 6.0.1 and Tomcat 5.5 in laptop with vista ultimate
I followed a tutorial to create a JSP, but at the moment of running the project, I got the error attached below.
I register Tomcat as a server in netbeans, but obviously not properly.
I am not well related with the content of the $catalina_home or $catalina_base. I don't think they are set up, although I got the tomcat home page when I browse localhost:8080
I have wasted a lot of time looking by myself, the related info is scattered and didn't help me so far.
I deleted Tomcat as a registered server, and tried with Glassfish, which was registered by default, but I got another error.

Please, any hint on how to proceed and troubleshoot this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Re: netbeans with external tomcat

Javier Ortiz-2
This error is due to Netbeans not being able to start the tomcat server (missing scripts). In these cases you must have the local installed server running and setup the admin password within Netbeans to make it work.

Hi Roberto,
It should be very easy and if you used the Installer version of Tomcat,
there is nothing to setup.

I think what its happening is that you have in fact installed TC correctly
and you have "probably" got it installed from Tools->Servers.

The project itself is probably not using the right TC.
So right click on the project, go to properties -> RUN
and make sure its using the external tomcat you installed... one can switch
the project between different tomcats in NB

Have fun...

Thanks, it looks interesting.

Has anyone here actually used it yet?  What are its "gotchas"?  How's
performance?  Is anyone working on integrating it with NB?

Re: netbeans with external tomcat

Guys, thanks for the advices...
I am going to try first reinstalling tomcat, the zip version that comes with the start and stop batch files, which are obviously missing.
And I am going to install a full version of netbeans, that doesn't need and external tomcal.
At first, I thought that the combination I chose was a good one...it probably is, but not for a beginner as me.

Thanks again to all of you..

Roberto.
