[71cat] [news] NetBeans 7.1.1 testing starts today

Jiří Kovalský
Hello NetCAT 7.1 participants,

as I announced on Monday, we have built the first release candidate
of NetBeans IDE 7.1.1 and kindly ask you to help us test it. The testing
should be completed by next Sunday - February 26th which in my opinion
could fit into your calendars. :)

If you decide to participate, please raise your hand by scrolling
down the 7.1.1 Go/NoGo page [1] and adding your name to the "NetCAT 7.1
testers" table as soon as possible. Thanks!

Now, let me explain the testing scenarios. Please use JDK 7 Update 3
and latest update of JDK 6 on Mac OS X. We basically need you to perform
an upgrade test and if time permits also an install test:

1. Upgrade test

1.1 Backup your NetBeans IDE 7.1 installation and user directories.
1.2 Launch your NetBeans IDE 7.1.
1.3 Invoke "Tools > Plugins" from main menu.
1.4 Switch to "Settings" tab, select "NetBeans Distribution" Update
Center and click "Edit" button.
1.5 Change URL to [3] and push "OK" button.
1.6 Switch to "Updates" tab, click "Update" button to install "Auto
Update Services" plugin.
1.7 Push "Next >" button, check "I accept..." checkbox and then click
"Update" button.
1.8 After the plugin is downloaded push "Finish" button and wait till
IDE is restarted.
1.9 Repeat step 1.3 and click "Update" button to start upgrade to 7.1.1.
1.10 Repeat step 1.7 and after all plugins are downloaded push "Finish".
1.11 IDE restarts one more time. Now test as much as you can and watch
out what happens! :)
1.12 Write either Go or NoGo to your cell in "7.1 > 7.1.1 Upgrade Test"
column and provide comments if necessary.

2. Install test (optional)

2.1 Download your favorite distribution of NetBeans IDE 7.1.1 [3].
2.2 Install the IDE and launch it.
2.3 Open your projects and then do a quick test of all features you
typically use.
2.4 Perform step 1.3, switch to "Settings" tab and disable "Certified
Plugins" and "Plugin Portal" Update Centers.
2.5 Switch to "Available Plugins" tab, right click any plugin and choose
"Check All" from popup menu.
2.6 Click "Install" button, click "Next >" button, check "I accept..."
checkbox and click "Install" button.
2.7 Perform step 1.8. and then do another quick test of all features you
are used to use.
2.8 Exit IDE and then uninstall it using <nb_install_dir>/uninstall script.
2.9 Write either Go or NoGo to your cell in "Install/Extend/Uninstall
test" column and provide comments if necessary.

After step 1.10, during restart the IDE process died after it was done unpacking the plugins. I had to manually start it again for it to work. Hopefully something is in the logs.

Step 1.8. IDE never restarts. I thought it was because I was running from USB, but I waited 15 mins so far on a normal install on Windows 7 and still hasn't started (during step 2.7)

Done with testing:

Found issue http://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=208572 during the upgrade test.
Saw another instance of issue http://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=207579 during the Install/Extend/Uninstall test.

I already miss the parsing enhancements on 7.2... Can't live without them now :P

Subject: [71cat] [news] NetBeans 7.1.1 testing starts today

Of course, I apologize. Step 1.5 should read "Change URL to [2]".

Fortunately, there are only smart people here! :)

This has always been the case for me with NB 7.1 on Win 7.  It never restarts automatically… I suspect Windows "security" getting in the way as usual.

I complained before, and I'll complain again :-).

This "design" stinks.

I think everyone would agree that if I am running 7.1.1 code then it should say 7.1.1.  Whatever the technical challenge is, it should have been addressed long ago.

Hi Scott,

I totally agree with you in that the current "design" is completely
misleading! If the IDE has been updated then this fact HAS to be
reflected in the IDE itself (i.e. splash screen, etc.). Thus, actually I
would (almost) file a bug report for this.

Cheers,
Holger

P.S.: I forgot to mention that this behavior is especially puzzling if
you update your IDE and get still the 7.1 splash screen and your next
door colleague installs the IDE freshly and gets the 7.1.1 branding...
Then you really start to think: "Did the update really work correctly?"
